About Gibson Banjos

Orville Gibson began making mandolins in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the late 1890s. In 1918 Gibson began production on banjos, and rapidly become the standard bearer. Gibson banjos remain as the top brand to this day.

The legendary Earl Scruggs wrote the book on bluegrass banjo on a Gibson Granada banjo, which is still very popular today. The Gibson Granada banjo brought the crisp, clear sound of a solid maple resonator to the Gibson line in 1925 and has been the player's choice ever since.

The Gibson Mastertone banjo is one of those great success stories; and though it had its occasional failures, the "Mastertone" brand has made it through more than 75 years of hard times and rough service. Today, it is the only surviving representative -- still in production -- of the turn-of-the-century banjo era; and it is the instrument most highly acclaimed by both bluegrass and dixieland banjoists. While several models were unsuccessful, a major portion of the line won its way to the stages, homes, and hearts of countless musicians.

Gibson currently produces two lines: the "Standard" line, which features the Granada, the J.D Crowe "Black Jack", the RB, the RB-250, & the RB-3 Wreath. Then there's the Earl Scruggs line, featuring the Golden Deluxe, the Standard, and the Earl.
